The United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned the recent mass abduction of Christians in Nigeria's Kaduna State, declaring that the US will not tolerate violence against innocent Christians.
The statement from the committee, posted on its verified X account, addressed the January 18, 2026, attack in the Kurmin Wali (or Kure) community of Kajuru Local Government Area. Gunmen raided three churches, an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), a Cherubim and Seraphim congregation, and a Catholic church during Sunday services, abducting more than 160 worshippers (with some reports citing up to 177 initially, and over 168 still held after escapes).
The US House Committee on Foreign Affairs stated:
“This past Sunday, Islamic terrorists in Nigeria raided churches and kidnapped more than 168 Christians. President Trump made it clear: We cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria. The United States will not tolerate the massacre of innocent Christians.”
This response highlights ongoing US concerns about targeted violence against Christian communities in northern and central Nigeria, amid persistent banditry, kidnappings, and insurgencies.
President Donald Trump and several lawmakers have previously described such incidents as persecution or genocide against Christians, urging stronger action from Nigerian authorities.
Nigerian officials, including the Kaduna State government and police, initially denied the abductions to prevent panic but later confirmed the incident after verification.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin noted that security forces were mobilized to secure the victims' release.
The government has consistently rejected claims of a "Christian genocide," attributing the violence primarily to criminal banditry rather than systematic religious targeting.
The abduction has drawn renewed international attention, with calls for enhanced US-Nigeria cooperation to protect religious minorities and combat insecurity in affected regions.
Rescue efforts for the kidnapped worshippers remain ongoing.
