The United States Mission to Nigeria today extended official condolences following the death of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the revered Nigerian cleric recognized worldwide for his courageous defense of religious tolerance.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the Mission said:"Mission Nigeria offers condolences to the loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi following his passing on January 15. Imam Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance and had a long history of outreach across religious communities.
The Department of State formally recognized Imam Abdullahi with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award for his courageous efforts in June of 2018 which saved the lives of hundreds of Christians who were being attacked in Barkin Ladi, Plateau state.
"His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony, and we know his legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike".
The statement highlights Imam Abdullahi's heroic actions during the 2018 violence in Plateau State, where he sheltered hundreds in his mosque and home, refusing to surrender them to attackers.
The U.S. Department of State's 2019 award underscored his role as a symbol of interfaith harmony amid ongoing communal tensions in Nigeria.
Imam Abdullahi passed away at age 90 after a heart condition, prompting tributes from Nigerian leaders, religious groups, and international observers.
The U.S. Mission's message, issued on January 20, 2026, reaffirms America's appreciation for leaders who promote peace and mutual respect across faiths.
