US AFRICOM Pledges Support to NDLEA in Battle Against Illicit Drugs

A high-level delegation from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) met with Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, to reaffirm their commitment to deepening collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking.

The delegation, led by Philip Esch, US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Liaison to AFRICOM, praised the strong and longstanding partnership between NDLEA and US law enforcement agencies, describing it as “of utmost importance” to the United States government.

Esch specifically commended General Marwa for his effective leadership and openness to international cooperation.

He also expressed pleasure at the recent renewal of Marwa’s tenure for another five years and emphasized the desire for continued close engagement.

“We appreciate all the support and the leadership you provide… We are very happy that your tenure was renewed for another five years. We really look forward to continued engagement,” Esch stated.

James Elseth, another member of the delegation, highlighted NDLEA’s impressive regional and international approach to tackling organized crime, noting that the agency’s work contributes significantly to security beyond Nigeria’s borders.

He thanked General Marwa for maintaining US-provided equipment in excellent condition and announced that two major support projects are already in progress, in addition to ongoing training and other forms of assistance.

In response, General Marwa expressed gratitude for AFRICOM’s consistent support and credited the successes of NDLEA to strong international partnerships, particularly from the United States, as well as the commitment and encouragement of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration.

He also congratulated Philip Esch on his years of meritorious service to the US government.

Marwa stressed the dangerous link between illicit drugs and terrorism, urging continued and increased support in key areas, including airport scanning equipment, digital forensic tools, portable drug detection devices, forensic laboratory upgrades, and sniffer dogs.

The meeting highlights the growing strategic cooperation between the United States and Nigeria in addressing transnational drug threats, with both sides expressing strong commitment to intensifying joint efforts for greater regional and global impact.
