The Republic of Türkiye has identified 76 wooden and metal artefacts believed to originate from Nigeria and is ready to return them, in a move expected to deepen cultural relations between the two countries.
Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, HE Mehmet Poroy, announced the development during a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, Esq., in Abuja on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Ambassador Poroy explained that Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism had pinpointed the objects last May after receiving information about them.
He said repatriation discussions would begin as soon as the Nigerian government formally identifies and claims ownership.“We are eager to see them returned to Nigeria,” the ambassador stated.
He added that both nations hope to sign a cultural cooperation agreement during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s forthcoming visit to Turkey.
To further strengthen ties, Ambassador Poroy revealed plans to establish a cultural centre in Nigeria focused on promoting traditional arts and providing education for young Nigerian women.
He also extended invitations to Nigerian officials for upcoming events, including a photo exhibition and a Turkish coffee chat.
In response, Minister Musawa welcomed the initiative and stressed the urgency of concluding the cultural cooperation agreement.
She described the potential partnership as “a golden opportunity” for cultural diplomacy and called on officials to fast-track the process.
The minister highlighted Nigeria’s interest in joint projects with Turkey in the film industry, cultural exchanges, and women’s empowerment in fashion.
She positioned Nigeria as a key gateway to the global Black community due to its population and cultural influence, noting that closer collaboration could advance mutual understanding and economic opportunities within the Global South.
