Troops Clear Multiple Settlements in Niger Community, Neutralize IEDs

Troops of the 1 Division Nigerian Army have successfully cleared several settlements in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and maintaining intense pressure on insurgent groups in the region.

The clearance operation, which began on January 20, overcame significant challenges including difficult terrain and mechanical breakdowns of key assets such as Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and Armoured Fighting Vehicles.

Despite these obstacles, the troops advanced methodically, clearing the following settlements: Galadima Kogo, Danpkala, Angwan Shawo, Kaure, Onagbi, Iburo, Kudogo, Kori, Kampani Kpakari, Chigwamya, Chikuba, and Nabwi. At Nabwi, troops encountered a roadside IED detonation followed by hostile fire from insurgents.

The attack was swiftly repelled through superior firepower, allowing the operation to continue without further incident.Nigerian Air Force platforms provided critical close air support throughout the mission, while unmanned aerial vehicles operated by the Niger State Government delivered essential reconnaissance and real-time monitoring.

According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, Shiroro LGA has long served as a strategic operational base for Boko Haram splinter factions, particularly elements of Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) and ANSARU.

These groups, led by notorious commanders including Saddiku, Umar Taraba, Kabiru Doctor, and Mamman Kabir, have used the area to refine IED production techniques, smuggle arms, establish sleeper cells, and impose informal taxation on local communities.

The insurgents’ foothold in settlements such as Allawa–Madawaki has enabled them to extend violent activities into neighboring states including Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kogi, as well as deepen their reach across the North Central and Northwest zones.

Military officials emphasized that continued intelligence-driven operations, combined with effective air-ground coordination, are essential to denying insurgents freedom of movement and preventing the consolidation of influence along critical corridors linking the Northeast, Northwest, and North Central regions.

“The ongoing operations in Shiroro will not only restore civilian confidence but will also disrupt the ability of JAS and Boko Haram splinter cells to consolidate influence in key strategic corridors,” a military source stated.

The successful clearance marks a notable step forward in efforts to stabilize the North Central region and degrade the operational capacity of terrorist groups operating beyond their traditional Northeast strongholds.
