Three Kano hospital workers suspended over patient's death after surgery

Officials of the Kano State Hospital Management board have suspended no fewer than three personnel linked to the death of Kano woman Aishatu Umar after she underwent surgery at a government-owned hospital, Abubakar Imam Urology Center, where scissors allegedly used during the operation were forgotten inside her body.

The officials who confirmed the incident said a preliminary and transparent investigation launched into the matter established that the unfortunate incident occurred at the centre.

The board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, in a statement by his Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, however, said the board has outrightly suspended the personnel with immediate effect and referred them to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and appropriate disciplinary actions.

According to the statement, “Following a preliminary and transparent investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the Board has established that the unfortunate incident involving the late Aishatu Umar did occur at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center.

“In line with its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and patient safety, the Board has outrightly suspended three (3) personnel directly involved in the case from clinical activities with immediate effect. Furthermore, the matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with existing laws, professional guidelines, and ethical standards.

“The Kano State Hospitals Management Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathises with them over this painful loss. The Board reassures the public that it will not condone negligence in any form and will continue to take decisive actions to safeguard the lives, dignity, and trust of patients across all state health facilities.

“The Management Board remains resolute in strengthening internal monitoring, enforcing professional standards, and ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future,” the statement, however, reads.

Recall that the incident has sparked outrageous concerns among members of the general public.
