The Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance in Rivers State has strongly condemned the Rivers State House of Assembly for initiating impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.
The assembly formally commenced the process on Thursday, January 8, 2026, levelling accusations of gross misconduct and unauthorised expenditure against the governor and his deputy.
In a strongly worded press statement released in Port Harcourt on Wednesday and signed by its chairman, Akwu Jonathan, the coalition described the impeachment move as “lawless”, “morally bankrupt”, and “politically reckless”.
The group accused the lawmakers of abusing their constitutional powers in a bid to undermine the democratic will of the people during the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Calling the proceedings a “calculated plot to hijack governance through legislative brigandage”, the coalition labelled the action a clear betrayal of public trust and insisted that the assembly lacks the legitimate mandate to proceed.
The statement demanded an immediate and unconditional halt to the impeachment process. It further issued a stern warning: “Should the Assembly proceed further down this unlawful path, the Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance will activate a comprehensive recall process against complicit members of the Rivers State House of Assembly across all constituencies."
The group pledged widespread grassroots mobilisation, declaring: “We are prepared to mobilize ward by ward, street by street, and community by community to reclaim the people’s mandate and expose those who have chosen betrayal over representation.”
The latest development comes against the backdrop of a prolonged political rift in Rivers State, which has seen repeated clashes between Governor Fubara and factions within the assembly, many of whom are aligned with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The coalition’s threat of mass recall of lawmakers adds fresh tension to an already volatile situation, raising the stakes as the impeachment process moves forward.
