TCN Forecasts 624MW Grid Boost from Abuja Power Project

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the Abuja Feeding Scheme project, upon completion, will deliver an additional approximately 624 megawatts (MW) of wheeling capacity to the national grid, significantly enhancing bulk power supply to the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.

Oluwagbenga Ajiboye, Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider (TSP) at TCN, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the ongoing project sites in Abuja on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

The $170 million initiative, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), involves the construction of five new substations located at Dawaki, Lugbe, Kuje, Wumba, and Apo along with associated transmission infrastructure.

This includes 143 kilometers of 330kV transmission lines from Lafia in Nasarawa State to Abuja (New Apo) and 81 kilometers of 132kV lines within the FCT.

The project, which commenced in April 2019 and is structured in six lots (with Lots 1 and 2 covering major transmission lines and Lots 3–6 focusing on the substations), is designed to create a third independent power source for Abuja.

This reinforcement aims to ensure more reliable, round-the-clock electricity supply, addressing long-standing transmission constraints in the capital.

Ajiboye emphasized that the scheme will strengthen and expand the transmission network, providing sufficient capacity to meet growing power demand in Abuja for the foreseeable future.

Reports indicate the project has achieved over 91% completion, though challenges such as right-of-way issues along some transmission corridors have caused delays, prompting TCN to seek federal government intervention to expedite resolution and final commissioning.

The Abuja Feeding Scheme forms part of broader efforts under Nigeria's Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme to improve grid stability, reduce transmission losses, and boost overall electricity delivery nationwide.
