Suicide Bomber Rams Explosive-Laden Vehicle into Military Convoy in Borno

A suicide bomber driving a van packed with explosives struck a Nigerian military convoy in the volatile Timbuktu triangle area of Borno State on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers and injuries to an unspecified number of troops.

The attack targeted troops from Operation HADIN KAI and Operation DESERT SANITY who were returning from a successful clearance mission that dismantled several Boko Haram insurgent camps, eliminated numerous terrorists, and recovered arms, ammunition, vehicles, medical supplies, grains, and other logistics items from enclaves including Chilaria, Garin Faruk, and Abirma.

Security sources confirmed to Daily Trust that among the fatalities were two senior officers, a major and a lieutenant. Corpses were airlifted to Maiduguri for burial preparations, while the wounded received immediate medical care.

"The attack caused significant damage to military equipment used for offensive and defensive operations in the weeks-long clearance operations," one soldier told the publication.

Armoured and logistics vehicles were destroyed in the blast. An unnamed officer described the incident as a setback but emphasized resilience: “Yes! You know, every operation came with setbacks, but we overcame it. Unfortunately we lost five soldiers in the incident. Manga (the Commander) is hale and hearty and the operation continues, thank you.”

The Timbuktu triangle has long been a hotspot for insurgent activity. It is the same region where Boko Haram previously ambushed, captured, and executed Brigadier General Musa Uba.

The strike follows recent military successes announced by Lt-Col Sani Uba, spokesman for Operation HADIN KAI. On January 18, 2026, troops conducted intelligence-led operations supported by air surveillance, repelling armed drone attacks from insurgents while maintaining high morale and dominance in the area.

The military high command has vowed to press on with efforts to eliminate terrorist threats, protect civilians, and restore peace in the North East.

No immediate claim of responsibility has been reported, but the tactics align with established insurgent methods in the region.
