Students Protest Rising Kidnappings in Ekpoma, Edo State

A group of individuals claiming to represent students staged a peaceful protest on Monday, January 5, 2026, in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, decrying what they called an alarming increase in kidnappings in the area.

The demonstration follows an announcement last week by a group identifying as students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, of plans for a mass protest over escalating abductions in the university community.

Protesters cited the recent kidnappings of a student named Akhabhe Favour and an unnamed former student union leader as key triggers.

Protest leader Andrew Oziegbe addressed journalists, emphasizing the need to spotlight persistent insecurity.

He urged authorities to intensify security measures, criticizing the current response as insufficient and warning of growing fear among residents and students. However, AAU management swiftly distanced the institution from the action.

In a statement issued by Principal Assistant Registrar/Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, the university declared that the protesters are not registered students, members of the Students’ Union Government, or affiliated with AAU in any way.

“The individuals involved... do not have the authorization or right to represent the university or organize activities in its name,” the statement read, adding that unauthorized actions would face appropriate sanctions to protect the institution's interests and maintain order.

The protest comes amid broader concerns over insecurity in parts of Edo State, with recent reports of abductions underscoring calls for enhanced government and security agency intervention.
