Speaker Abbas Urges Security Agencies to Rescue Abducted Kurmin Wali Worshippers

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has called on Nigeria's security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue over 100 worshippers abducted by suspected terrorists during attacks on churches in Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, targeted three churches in the remote village, with reports indicating that gunmen abducted between 160 and 177 individuals during ongoing services. Initial denials by authorities gave way to confirmations, with some victims—reportedly 11—later escaping and returning home.

In a strongly worded statement, Speaker Abbas condemned the assault on places of worship, describing it as part of a disturbing recent trend of mass kidnappings targeting vulnerable soft spots such as schools and religious gatherings.

He voiced deep concern over the escalating wave of insecurity but expressed strong confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu to effectively address the crisis. The Speaker emphasized the need for unified national action, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in making Nigeria safer for its citizens, their properties, and businesses.

Speaker Abbas also praised Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for demonstrating exemplary leadership at the state level during this challenging period, highlighting his proactive engagement, including visits to the affected community and assurances of safe returns for the abductees.

The Speaker concluded by offering prayers for the swift and safe reunion of the kidnapped worshippers with their families and community, calling on divine intervention amid ongoing search-and-rescue operations by security forces.
