Rivers State Assembly Initiates Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, escalating the protracted political crisis in the oil-rich state.

During a plenary session on Thursday, January 8, 2026, lawmakers led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule issued a formal notice of impeachment to the governor, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

The notice, read on the floor of the House, accused Fubara of various constitutional violations, including failure to present the 2026 appropriation bill to the Assembly and alleged misuse of public funds.

Sources within the Assembly claim the governor has been running the state without an approved budget for months, in defiance of legislative oversight.

The move comes amid the lingering rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The pro-Wike faction, which controls a majority in the Assembly following court rulings validating their seats, has repeatedly clashed with the governor over control of the state's political structure.

This is the second major impeachment attempt against Fubara in less than three years. A similar effort in October 2023 was halted by presidential intervention and subsequent court orders, leading to a fragile peace brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

Reacting to the development, sources close to the governor described the action as "politically motivated" and vowed to challenge it legally. Supporters of Fubara have begun mobilizing, raising fears of renewed unrest in Port Harcourt.

Political analysts warn that the fresh impeachment bid could plunge Rivers State into deeper instability, potentially affecting oil production and national revenue. As required by Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, the notice must be supported by at least one-third of Assembly members and followed by an investigation panel if the governor does not respond within the stipulated period.

The situation remains tense, with security agencies reportedly placed on high alert across the state capital. Developments are being closely monitored as both camps prepare for what could be a prolonged legal and political battle.
