The political crisis in Rivers State escalated dramatically today as the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
This marks another chapter in the long-standing rift between Fubara and pro-Wike lawmakers, following previous failed attempts, including one in March 2025.During Thursday's plenary session, Majority Leader Major Jack presented a notice of impeachment, citing alleged gross misconduct under Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.
The lawmakers outlined eight specific allegations against Governor Fubara:
1. Reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds – Accusations of extra-budgetary spending without proper legislative approval.
2. Unconstitutional misappropriation of public funds – Claims of diverting state resources improperly.
3. Hindering the Rivers State House of Assembly from performing its constitutional duties – Including interference in legislative functions.
4. Illegal appointments of persons without allowing for screening by the House of Assembly – As required by the constitution.
5. Seizure of salaries and funds meant for Assembly members – Withholding allowances and entitlements.
6. Seizure of salaries of the Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Emeka Amadi – Specifically targeting the clerk's remuneration.
7. Refusal to implement provisions of the constitution on financial autonomy of the legislature and the judiciary – Defying Supreme Court rulings on independence.
8. Withholding of funds meant for the running of the Rivers House of Assembly Service Commission and hindering its activities – Blocking operational funds and obstructing the commission.
The Assembly also accused the governor of breaching peace agreements brokered by President Bola Tinubu in 2023 and 2025, and barred him from presenting the 2026 budget or mid-term expenditure framework until the impeachment probe concludes.
