Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu says governance has
been reduced to childish politics in Rivers state.
Yesufu said this in a statement she posted on her verified X
handle on Friday, describing the the political crisis in the state as
concerning.
The co-convener of BringBackOurGirls Movement was reacting
to the impeachment drive against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the State House
of Assembly.
She lamented that the lives and well-being of ordinary Rivers
people no longer seem to matter, stressing that all that matters to some
lawmakers is power, ego, and self-interest, even as people struggle with rising
prices, lack of jobs, bad roads, poor healthcare, and insecurity.
“Today’s announcement that the Rivers State House of
Assembly is moving again to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara is deeply
concerning.
“In Rivers State, governance has been reduced to childish
politics. Lawmakers have become playthings for political operators.
“While millions of Nigerians suffer under economic hardship
and daily hardship, it is worrying that those entrusted with public office in
Rivers are more focused on internal political battles than on delivering real
governance for the people,” she said.
