Rivers Assembly Yet to Serve Fubara Impeachment Notice

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is yet to receive any formal notice of impeachment from the State House of Assembly, three days after 27 lawmakers initiated proceedings against him and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The majority members of the Assembly, who are widely perceived to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, commenced the impeachment process last Thursday, citing alleged gross misconduct in office.

Although the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, had publicly stated that he would ensure the impeachment notice was formally delivered to the governor, credible sources within Government House, Port Harcourt, confirmed on Monday evening that no official communication had been received as of that time.

The development has heightened political tension in the state, with observers noting that the failure to serve the required notice may delay or complicate further steps in the impeachment process as prescribed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Section 188 of the Constitution requires that a notice of allegation of gross misconduct must be signed by not less than one-third of the members of the House of Assembly and personally served on the governor before the process can proceed to the next stage.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Rivers State Government nor the House of Assembly has issued an official statement addressing the delay in serving the notice.

The situation continues to draw attention amid the long-running political rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, which has dominated the state's political landscape since 2023.
