The Rivers State House of Assembly has firmly rejected overtures from a peace committee of the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF), signaling no immediate retreat from its ongoing push to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The 32-member Assembly, with 26 lawmakers backing the move, accuses the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.
The allegations stem from a notice formally presented during a plenary session earlier this month, in line with constitutional procedures under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.
The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, declined to meet with PANDEF's seven-member peace and reconciliation committee, headed by prominent lawyer and former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN).
This refusal underscores the deepening political rift in the state, amid claims that the impeachment drive is politically motivated rather than purely procedural.
The Assembly has adjourned its sitting to Tuesday, January 27, 2026, heightening concerns that proceedings could advance rapidly.
A letter has already been sent to the state's Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, requesting the formation of a seven-man investigative panel to probe the allegations against the governor.
The impeachment effort, which began on January 8, 2026, marks the latest escalation in the prolonged feud between Governor Fubara and forces aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike.
While some reports indicate separate engagements between key figures and the PANDEF panel, including meetings with FCT Minister Wike and Governor Fubara Assembly members appear unmoved and intent on pursuing the process.
Tensions remain high, with parallel court orders, public condemnations from groups like the Ijaw National Congress (INC), and warnings of potential instability in the oil-rich state.
The Assembly insists its actions comply with the law, while critics view the move as a bid to destabilize the executive.
