In a move laden with apparent contempt, the Rivers State House of Assembly has served Governor Siminalayi Fubara with an impeachment notice erroneously addressing him as "Madam" a title typically reserved for females.
The blunder occurred in the official letter dated January 8, 2026, signed by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, forwarding allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the governor by 26 lawmakers.
Notably, the same document correctly addressed Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu (a woman) as "Madam," highlighting the glaring misgendering of Fubara, a male governor.
The impeachment proceedings commenced on Thursday during plenary, where Majority Leader Major Jack read out the charges, citing issues such as:
Refusal to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the Assembly
Extra-budgetary spending and unauthorised expenditures
Withholding funds meant for the Assembly and its Service Commission
Alleged non-compliance with Supreme Court rulings on legislative autonomy
Demolition of the Assembly complex (referencing past crises)
Speaker Amaewhule described Fubara as a "threat to democracy" and a "mistake," accusing him of boasting that the Assembly is powerless and referring to lawmakers as "toothless bulldogs".
The action escalates the protracted political feud between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Federal Capital Territory Minister, whose loyalists dominate the Assembly.
A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers has condemned the impeachment move, urging lawmakers to resist external pressures and warning it could destabilise the state.
As required by Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, Fubara has seven days to respond to the allegations.
The House adjourned until January 15, with tensions expected to rise amid the ongoing power struggle that has plagued Rivers State governance.
