The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, calling on party members in the State House of Assembly to immediately halt the process.
In a press statement issued on Thursday by the party's spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC described the impeachment move as "untenable" and a potential resurfacing of old conflicts from within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that could tarnish the party's image.
"We solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy," the statement read. "It will be totally untenable for our party to keep quiet when an obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP are allowed to resurface in our great party."
The impeachment proceedings, initiated by the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly earlier on Thursday, cite allegations of gross misconduct, including breaches of a presidential peace agreement, extra-budgetary spending, and the demolition of the Assembly complex.
The APC statement emphasized the need to protect the stability of what it described as an "APC government" in Rivers State, warning that internal disagreements could "drag the image of our great party into the mud and stifle the continuous progress and development of Rivers State."
Nwauju highlighted the 2025 state budget of ₦1.485 trillion, which was transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu during a period of emergency rule imposed in March 2025 and lifted in September.
The budget was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, and is set to run until August 2026.
"If the Governor is comfortable with the composition of the said budget, he may elect not to present any supplementary budget," the statement noted, adding that the constitution permits governors a six-month spending window into the new fiscal year.
The party urged APC lawmakers to "resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilize the Government of Rivers State" and pledged to do "everything possible" to prevent destabilization through "fratricidal disagreements."
"Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy!!!" the statement concluded.
The development comes amid renewed political tensions in the oil-rich state, following Governor Fubara's defection to the APC in late 2025 and ongoing rivalries with factions loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
