Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the revered Islamic cleric celebrated worldwide for risking his life to protect 262 Christians during deadly communal violence in 2018, has died. He was 90 years old.
The Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area breathed his last on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, where he had been admitted for ten days due to complications from a heart condition.
His health had been unstable since the initial diagnosis, with regular check-ups and periods at home, according to his son, Saleh Abubakar, who confirmed the sad news.Imam Abubakar's act of extraordinary courage occurred in June 2018 amid violent clashes that engulfed 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, claiming numerous lives in faith-based communal conflict.
As gunmen attacked predominantly Christian communities, hundreds fled toward Nghar village. The Imam opened his mosque and personal residence, sheltering 262 Christians (with some reports citing over 300) and refusing to surrender them despite direct threats from the attackers.
He confronted the assailants, insisting everyone inside was Muslim and even offering his own life in exchange for theirs. His bravery prevented a much higher death toll—though tragically, over 80 people who could not reach safety were killed that day.
The selfless deed earned Imam Abubakar widespread acclaim, including the International Religious Freedom Award from the United States Department of State in 2019, national recognition from Nigerian leaders, and enduring admiration as a symbol of interfaith harmony and humanity.
He is survived by 19 children (12 sons and 7 daughters), many grandchildren, and a legacy of peaceful coexistence in a region long plagued by tensions. Burial is scheduled for Friday in Nghar village following Juma’at prayers.
Imam Abubakar Abdullahi's life and final act continue to inspire hope that compassion can transcend religious divides, even in the face of grave danger. May his soul rest in peace.
