President Tinubu Condoles Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Over Death of Son


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband Dr. Ivara Esege, and their family following the tragic passing of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.


In a personal statement issued on January 8, 2026, the President expressed profound grief, stating: "With a deep sense of grief, I condole with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and the entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi.


"Drawing from his own experiences, President Tinubu noted, "As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child." He added, "I empathise with the family at this difficult time, and I mourn this sad loss with them."


The President praised Adichie as "a literary icon who has brought joy and light to many homes globally," and prayed that she and her family find strength in God during this trying period.


Nkanu Nnamdi, one of Adichie's twin boys born in 2024, passed away on January 7, 2026, after a brief illness, according to a family statement released on Thursday. 


The family has requested privacy as they grieve.Adichie, celebrated for works like Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, has long been a global voice on literature, feminism, and identity. 


The couple also has a daughter born in 2016.Messages of sympathy have poured in from across Nigeria and the world as the literary community mourns with the family.
