Political parties in Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Forum of National Chairmen of Political Parties (NCPP), have announced plans to hold a nationwide rally on January 10, 2026, to mobilise public support for the implementation of the country's new tax regime.
The parties described the reforms as a critical economic policy that rises above partisan politics and serves the broader national interest.
In a statement issued after a consultative meeting, NCPP leaders, chaired by Uche Nnadi, emphasised that the tax reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration should not be politicised.
“This new tax regime is not a political agenda of any single party or administration; it is a national economic necessity whose benefits will be felt across generations,” the forum said.
“Its successful implementation is crucial to stabilising our economy and positioning Nigeria on a sustainable growth path.”
The NCPP highlighted that the reforms aim to broaden the revenue base, reduce reliance on borrowing, enforce fiscal discipline, and enable governments at all levels to fund essential infrastructure, social services, and economic opportunities.
The planned January 10 rally, according to the parties, will serve as a peaceful and non-partisan platform to educate citizens on the long-term advantages of the reforms and demonstrate cross-party commitment to national development over narrow political interests.
While acknowledging the challenges that tax reforms may pose, the forum stressed the need for informed dialogue and national unity to ensure a smooth transition.
The political leaders also strongly distanced themselves from any attempts by “anti-democratic elements” to exploit the reforms for incitement, protests, or misinformation.
“We unequivocally dissociate ourselves from any plot to incite unrest or sabotage this reform. Any attempt to weaponise the tax regime for political chaos is unacceptable and constitutes a direct threat to democratic stability and national cohesion,” they declared.
The NCPP appealed to Nigerians, including youths, labour unions, civil society, market groups, and the private sector to embrace the reforms with patience and patriotism.
They further called on implementing agencies, particularly the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), to prioritise transparency, equity, and sensitivity to public concerns in order to build and maintain trust.
“Trust between government and the people is the foundation of sustainable reform,” the parties noted, reaffirming their commitment to democracy, peace, and economic stability.
Concluding their statement, the forum urged all stakeholders to rise above partisan divisions: “Nigeria’s future depends on our ability to act in the national interest.
"The new tax regime represents such a moment, and we must not allow politics to undermine economic survival.”
