Operatives from the Zamfara State Police Command's Anti-Illegal Mining Unit have recovered 2,500 litres of suspected hazardous and poisonous chemicals in Gusau Local Government Area.
The seizure occurred on Tuesday, January 28, 2026, around 4:40 p.m., during a routine patrol in the Lalan area of Gusau. The chemicals were found stored in 100 jerricans, with each container holding 25 litres.
Authorities have described the substances as highly dangerous, posing severe threats to both public health and the local environment if mishandled or improperly used.
A police statement released in Gusau on Thursday confirmed that investigations are now underway to trace the origin, ownership, and intended purpose of the chemicals. The goal is to identify and bring to justice those involved in their possession or distribution.
Security officials have called on residents to stay alert and immediately report any unusual activities or suspicious materials to law enforcement agencies.
This vigilance, they emphasized, is crucial to averting potential dangers to lives and property across the state. The recovery forms part of intensified statewide efforts to crack down on the circulation of harmful substances and other illicit activities that undermine public safety and security in Zamfara.
