A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has declared that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi remains the strongest and most viable option for the PDP if the party hopes to mount a serious challenge in the 2027 presidential election.
In a recent interview on Channels Television, Showunmi argued that Peter Obi represents the PDP's most potent "card" amid the party's current challenges, describing him as the candidate with genuine organic support and momentum capable of energizing the opposition.
Showunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar's campaigns, emphasized that Obi's appeal transcends traditional party structures, noting that his 2023 performance demonstrated widespread public investment in his candidacy.
He suggested that the PDP could potentially reclaim significant ground by aligning with or bringing back Obi, whose following remains a key force in Nigerian politics.
However, Showunmi acknowledged the complication: Peter Obi is currently associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he has reportedly positioned himself for another presidential run.
Showunmi described Obi as "not serious" in some political maneuvers but reiterated that the PDP's best pathway forward ironically lies with him.
The statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporters praising the acknowledgment of Obi's popularity, while critics questioned the practicality given Obi's exit from the PDP and his current platform.
Showunmi's comments come as Nigeria's opposition parties grapple with internal divisions, defections, and strategies to counter the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of 2027.
He has previously urged Obi to consider returning to the PDP to contest its primaries, arguing that the party owes the South-East geopolitical zone and that Obi's profile could secure victory in key regions.
