Toyin Abraham, the Nigerian actress, has recorded a new feat with her 2025 film ‘Oversabi Aunty,‘ which has grossed over N1 billion at the box office.
FilmOne, the movie’s distributor, announced the achievement
on Monday, stating that the movie has earned N1,017,201,953 from cinemas across
West Africa.
This makes ‘Oversabi Aunty’ the first Nollywood directorial
debut to surpass N1 billion and the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of
all time.
FilmOne also revealed that the film will soon expand to
select cinemas in the United States and Canada, following its ongoing
screenings in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
“Can somebody say WORLD BEST for a REASON!! The real Bestie
Jesu!! N1 BILLION+ at the box office,” the post reads.
“First Nollywood directorial debut to hit N1 BILLION. 4th
highest grossing Nollywood film of all time. West Africa, this is a full
celebration!!
“OVERSABI AUNTY still showing in cinemas nationwide in
select cinemas in UK and is coming to USA and Canada soon.”
Celebrating the feat via Instagram, Abraham expressed
gratitude to God, her fans, and the entire production team while describing
‘Oversabi Aunty’ as a proud milestone in her career.
“Thank you God. Thank you Toyintitans, Nigerians, my cast,
my crew, Filmone, everyone. I’m short of words,” she wrote.
“Oversabi Aunty to the world and still showing in cinemas
near you. My first directorial project. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
The movie follows the life of Toun, a self-righteous church
usher obsessed with “fixing” others, who turns family life into a moral
battlefield.
Her holy overzealousness peaks at a disastrous wedding
introduction, forcing her to confront the chaos she’s created.
Abraham’s achievement comes a few weeks after fellow
Nollywood filmmaker Funke Akindele secured a new feat with her latest film
‘Behind the Scenes’, grossing over N1 billion at the box office.
Akindele’s box office dominion has been a relentless march.
In 2023, her film ‘Battle On Buka Street’ became Nollywood’s highest-grossing
title with N640 million.
She then shattered the industry’s ceiling in January 2024 when ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ became the first Nollywood movie ever to hit N1 billion at the Nigerian box office.
Later that same year, ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa’ set a new regional record, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in West Africa with N1.6 billion.
