Omokri Accuses Peter Obi of Misleading Nigerians on Tinubu’s Foreign Trips

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has criticised the Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his claim that President Bola Tinubu has abandoned governance by spending long periods outside the country.

Omokri’s reaction followed a post by Obi on his verified X handle on Monday, where he questioned the President’s whereabouts and described his prolonged stay abroad as neglect of governance.

Responding in a post on X the same day, Omokri accused Obi of deliberately misleading Nigerians, insisting that President Tinubu’s location and activities had been clearly communicated by the Presidency.

“I read your most recent attack on the President, and it was a new low, even for you, and grossly irresponsible. Saying that nobody knows where the President is is a lie. You, and every other Nigerian who follows the news, know precisely where President Bola Tinubu is, because the Presidency was open and transparent about it,” he said.

According to Omokri, the President is currently in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, attending the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a fact he said was publicly announced.

He also dismissed Obi’s claim that Nigerians had not heard from the President since December 2025, describing it as a very blatant lie.

Omokri recalled that President Tinubu addressed the nation in a New Year’s Day broadcast and had embarked on several public engagements in late December 2025.

“Before that, the President visited Nigerian citizens in Borno, Bauchi and Lagos States between December 21 and December 23, 2025,” he said.

He added that during the visit to Borno State, Tinubu attended the wedding of Sadeeq Sheriff, son of former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, in Maiduguri.

Omokri said the President also travelled to Bauchi State to condole with the family of Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, before heading to Lagos, where he interacted with residents.

“After that, he went on a short vacation as allowed by the Constitution,” Omokri noted.

He noted that it was dishonest to describe these activities as neglect.

On Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, Omokri said Obi’s criticism showed a lack of understanding of governance and international diplomacy.

“Your mentor, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, spent 342 days travelling abroad in eight years, yet you celebrate him.that he governed Nigeria, yet you celebrate him. That is one whole year out of eight years! Mind you, this was during the time of the Sharia Crisis and the Niger-Delta Militancy,” Omokri wrote,

He said that those trips helped Nigeria secure debt relief.

He argued that no president could attract foreign investment by staying at home, adding that Tinubu’s foreign engagements were already yielding results.

Omokri cited Tinubu’s attendance at the BRICS Summit in Brazil, which he said resulted in a $2.5 billion investment by Brazilian meat producer, JBS.

He also mentioned the President’s trip to Qatar, where investors reportedly pledged $300 billion in investments to Nigeria.

According to him, these engagements contributed to Nigeria’s economic growth, including an increase in the country’s GDP from ₦269.29 trillion in May 2023 to ₦372.8 trillion, as well as a rise in foreign portfolio investments to nearly $14 billion between the first and third quarters of 2025.

“All of these saw Nigeria recording a projected GDP growth of 4.1 per cent in 2025,” Omokri added.

He concluded by saying Obi’s comments showed he was unfit to lead a complex country like Nigeria.

“That you do not know this is proof, once again, that you are a trader, not a leader, and you are better off operating a stall at Onitsha Market than leading a country as complex as Nigeria!,” he said.
