Nollywood filmmaker and actor Stanley Amandi has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to violently overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration.
According to reports, Amandi, a director and former chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) was taken into custody in September 2025 alongside several military officers.
Investigators allege that Amandi was recruited by the suspected coup plotters to serve as a propagandist, tasked with shaping public messaging to support the planned takeover.
The alleged scheme reportedly included plans to assassinate top government officials, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
This marks the first public disclosure of Amandi’s alleged involvement in the foiled plot, which came to light following military investigations into acts of indiscipline among officers. The Defence Headquarters recently confirmed that a special panel concluded its probe into the matter, with implicated military personnel set to face court-martial, while civilians like Amandi are expected to be tried in civil courts.
Amandi, known for directing films such as "The Album" and "Tiger King," as well as acting in projects like "Once Upon a Dream" (2024), had his last known social media activity on September 19, 2025, shortly before his detention.
The revelations emerge amid broader reports of the coup attempt, which security sources say was uncovered through intelligence operations in late 2025, leading to multiple arrests. Authorities have emphasized that the allegations remain under investigation.
