The Nigeria Immigration Service has introduced a new feature to its passport tracking system to notify applicants when their passports are ready for collection.
According to the NIS, the addition, tagged “passport produced,” aims to enhance the existing system by providing clear information on passports that are ready for physical pickup or awaiting courier delivery.
The Service said the update would help applicants stay informed about timelines and improve overall efficiency.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday, the NIS said, “The new addition, tagged “PRODUCED (PASSPORT PRODUCED, READY FOR COLLECTION)”, includes a feature informing applicants when their passports are ready for collection.
“This update enhances the existing tracking system, and helps applicants stay informed about timelines for passports produced and awaiting collection (for physical collection) or produced but not delivered (for courier delivery). Nigeria Immigration Service remains committed to delivering an efficient system that works for all in line with global best practices.”
The development follows public concerns over delays in passport processing, including a post by journalist Fisayo Soyombo, who shared his experience of waiting several months for his passport renewal.
Soyombo had recounted his experience applying for the renewal of his international passport. He said he paid N109,700 via the NIS payment portal on July 31, 2025, but experienced delays due to network problems and was still seeing “passport pending production” as feedback.
Responding, the NIS clarified that the passport in question had “already been produced and is ready for delivery” and noted that factors such as incomplete applications, security checks, or technical issues can occasionally cause delays.
The Service also highlighted that over 1.3 million passports had been produced in 2025 alone, and Nigeria’s passport had recently risen in ranking on the Henley Passport Index.
