NiMET Alerts Public on False Start Rainy Season

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has cautioned the public and especially farmers not to mistake recent scattered showers for the beginning of the 2026 rainy season, describing them as temporary “pseudo rains” that could lead to serious agricultural and health risks if acted upon prematurely.

Light rainfall was observed in parts of Lagos and Ogun states last week, leading many residents to believe the wet season had arrived ahead of schedule.

NiMet, however, clarified that these isolated showers are not indicative of true seasonal onset and are forecast to end within the next two weeks, possibly followed by a return to prolonged dry conditions.

Prof. Vincent Weli, Director of Weather Services at NiMet, strongly advised farmers to delay planting activities until confirmed onset signals are received.

“These are not the genuine rains of the 2026 season,” he stated. “Premature planting at this stage risks complete crop failure and heavy financial losses.”

The agency also issued a public health advisory, warning people in rain-affected areas against collecting or drinking the current rainwater due to possible contamination risks during this transitional weather phase.

NiMet will release its official 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Monday, February 10, 2026.

The detailed forecast will span February to December, offering month-by-month projections, sector-specific guidance (including agriculture, health, and water resources), and predictions at the local government level to support better planning and risk mitigation.

Stakeholders are urged to await official NiMet updates and avoid decisions based on unverified early rain observations.
