Nigeria, UAE Sign MoU to Boost Ports Development, Maritime Logistics, Digital Trade

Nigeria has taken a significant step to enhance its maritime sector through a strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates, as the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi Ports Group (AD Ports Group).

The agreement, aimed at exploring collaboration in ports development, maritime logistics, maritime services, economic zones, and digital trade infrastructure, was formalized on the sidelines of the recently concluded Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

This milestone underscores growing economic ties between Nigeria and the UAE, building on the recent Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that reduces tariffs, eliminates trade barriers, and promotes investment flows.

Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, led the Nigerian delegation at the signing ceremony, while Mohamed Hassan (in some reports, Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group) headed the UAE side.

The Director General/CEO of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, was also present.According to a statement from Osagie Edward, NIMASA’s Head of Public Relations, the MoU which had been under consideration for over two decades signals a renewed commitment to deepen cooperation in the maritime and blue economy sectors.

The Nigerian delegation subsequently briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the details and strategic importance of the agreement.

Minister Oyetola emphasized the partnership's potential benefits, stating that collaborating with AD Ports Group will strengthen port efficiency, logistics connectivity, maritime services, and digital trade infrastructure while supporting sustainable growth and positioning Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in the region.

The MoU aligns with broader efforts to advance Nigeria’s marine and blue economy agenda, attract foreign investment, and improve trade competitiveness through modernized infrastructure and digital solutions.

This development comes amid heightened bilateral engagements, including high-level meetings between AD Ports Group executives and Nigerian leadership, paving the way for potential investments that could transform Nigeria's ports and logistics.
