Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has issued a two-month evacuation order to all residents and communities living around Kainji Lake and its surrounding forests.
The directive is in preparation for a major joint security operation aimed at eliminating armed insurgents and bandits using the area as a hideout.
The governor announced the order on Tuesday after a meeting with the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, during a condolence visit in New Bussa.
Governor Bago stated:“We have given an ultimatum of two months from today that everybody, every community within that forest, should come out and be resettled. If they fail to do so, they risk being collateral damage.”
He added that residents will be resettled in safer, organized locations under the supervision of the Emirate Council.
The move follows repeated attacks in Borgu and Agwara Local Government Areas, with insurgents reportedly operating from the dense forests of Kainji Lake National Park.
The governor emphasized the need to clear the area and prevent civilian casualties during the upcoming operation.
Authorities have warned of strong action against anyone who fails to comply with the evacuation order.
The goal is to restore peace and make the Kainji Lake region safe for legitimate habitation and economic activities once criminal elements are removed.
