The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has canceled its planned nationwide protest against the newly implemented Tax Reform Acts, following productive engagements with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, and other government stakeholders.
The decision was announced on January 6-7, 2026, just days before the scheduled January 14 protest, which NANS had declared as a "National Day of Action" to oppose potential impacts of the reforms, including fears of tuition fee hikes and burdens on low-income families.
In a statement, NANS leadership expressed satisfaction with clarifications provided during meetings in Abuja, particularly with Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Committee.
Key assurances included:
The reforms exempt minimum wage earners and low-income individuals from certain taxes.
No taxation on gifts, remittances, or educational costs that would lead to increased tuition fees.
Enhanced social protection measures targeting higher-income earners.
NANS President Pedro Obi praised the dialogue, stating that the explanations addressed students' concerns and demonstrated the laws' focus on equitable taxation and economic growth.
The association passed a vote of confidence in the reforms and officially endorsed the four new tax laws signed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025.
The Tax Reform Acts, including the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, and others took effect on January 1, 2026, as planned, despite earlier calls from some quarters for delays.
Government officials welcomed NANS' decision, reiterating that the reforms aim to simplify Nigeria's tax system, boost revenue for development, and protect vulnerable groups.
The cancellation averts potential disruptions across campuses and major cities, marking a resolution through stakeholder consultation.
