NAF Airstrikes Neutralise Over 40 Terrorists in Borno, Foil Imminent Attacks

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dealt a major setback to terrorist groups in the northeast, confirming the neutralisation of more than 40 terrorists during precision airstrikes conducted in the Azir and Musarram areas of Borno State.

The operations took place on January 15 and 16, 2026, as part of the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai. According to the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the strikes were intelligence-driven and executed in close coordination with surface forces.

On January 15, NAF aircraft intercepted a large group of terrorists assembling on approximately 10 canoes at Musarram in the Tumbuns general area. The fighters were preparing to launch attacks along the Baga and Fish Dam axis. Multiple attack runs disrupted the group, causing widespread disarray.

Fleeing elements were tracked and subsequently neutralised. The following day, January 16, aircraft responded rapidly to a distress call from troops in Azir who were engaging terrorists attempting to withdraw. Successive precision strikes targeted fighters regrouping under tree cover, resulting in heavy casualties.

Post-strike battle damage assessments, combined with feedback from ground troops, local authorities, and community sources, confirmed the significant impact of the operations.

The strikes successfully disrupted planned attacks on both civilian communities and military positions, restoring relative calm to the affected areas. No civilian casualties were reported.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended the exceptional synergy between air and ground units, describing the missions as a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-led, joint operations. He reaffirmed the NAF’s resolve to maintain relentless pressure on terrorist networks until peace is fully restored across the northeast.

This latest success continues a series of intensified operations in Borno, particularly in known insurgent strongholds such as Damboa Local Government Area.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria have renewed their call for citizens to continue providing credible, timely intelligence to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
