The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is pushing to expedite the delivery of 12 advanced AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States, as part of efforts to bolster its combat capabilities against ongoing security threats.
Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff, led a delegation to a Programme Management Review meeting in San Diego, California, from January 5-6, 2026.
The discussions involved senior US government officials and representatives from Bell Textron, the helicopter's manufacturer.
During the meeting, Air Marshal Aneke praised the US government and Bell Textron for their cooperation, professionalism, and transparency in advancing the program.
He emphasized the NAF's commitment to accountability and timely results.The AH-1Z Viper, a twin-engine attack helicopter known for its precision strike capabilities, represents a significant upgrade for the NAF.
"This acquisition goes beyond a simple platform upgrade—it symbolizes the strong and enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States," Aneke said.
He highlighted the shared commitment to tackling evolving security challenges through collaboration.Aneke urged the team to prioritize on-schedule production while adhering to budget constraints, stressing innovation and proactive problem-solving.
He assured partners that the NAF would take all necessary steps to ensure swift delivery.
The new helicopters are expected to enhance the NAF's operational efficiency, enabling precise operations with minimal collateral damage, better support for ground troops, and improved protection for communities affected by insurgency and banditry.
Air Marshal Aneke extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support of the NAF.
He reaffirmed the force's dedication to combating terrorism and crime with professionalism, while maintaining public trust.
The deal, part of a broader foreign military sale approved by the US, underscores Nigeria's ongoing modernization of its air power to address internal security issues.
