In a heartfelt gesture recognizing enduring military service, the Chairman of the Military Pension Board (MPB), Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem, visited Master Warrant Officer Michael Etuwe (rtd), the former personal orderly to Nigeria's late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed.
The visit occurred on Monday at Etuwe's home in Masaka, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, according to a statement from the MPB's Public Relations Officer, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed.
Etuwe served closely alongside General Murtala during a transformative chapter in Nigeria's history. He was present in the official vehicle on February 13, 1976, when the Head of State was assassinated in a botched coup in Lagos.
Etuwe survived the attack that claimed the lives of General Murtala, his aide-de-camp Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, and the driver Sergeant Adamu Michika, making him one of the last living direct witnesses to the tragic event.
The MPB chairman's visit was framed as a symbolic acknowledgment of exemplary service and a mark of respect for veterans whose loyalty and sacrifices have helped safeguard Nigeria's stability and progress.
Abdulraheem reiterated the board's dedication to veterans' welfare, dignity, and ongoing support, noting that their contributions form a lasting foundation for national peace and development.
Etuwe expressed deep appreciation for the honor, calling it a rare and meaningful recognition.
He thanked the MPB chairman and the veterans' community for their solidarity and continued engagement.
Representatives from various veterans' associations and the Ministerial Committee on Veterans’ Welfare attended the event.
They commended Abdulraheem's leadership in prioritizing veterans' affairs, describing the visit as timely and encouraging for retired military personnel nationwide.
