Medical Negligence Alleged in Tragic Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son

The sudden death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, has been attributed by close family sources to alleged medical negligence at a private hospital in Lagos.

The toddler reportedly developed an infection during the Christmas holiday period while the family was in Lagos.

According to credible sources familiar with the circumstances, Nkanu’s condition initially required specialist care abroad.

Arrangements had already been finalized for a full medical evacuation to the United States, with a specialist medical team scheduled to transfer the child on January 7, 2026.

On January 6, 2026, the child was admitted to a private medical facility in Victoria Island, Lagos, primarily for diagnostic tests requested by the overseas medical team.

Sources say he arrived at the facility in a stable condition. However, in the hours that followed, his health reportedly deteriorated rapidly.

Individuals close to the family have strongly questioned the quality of care provided during this critical period, alleging that essential clinical protocols were not adequately followed.

“This wasn’t an act of God,” one source close to the matter told The Guardian. “This was a failure of care. If those professionals had done their jobs properly for just a few hours, that child would be alive today.”

The heartbreaking incident has sparked renewed concern about standards of emergency paediatric care in some private medical facilities in Nigeria, especially in life-threatening situations involving young children.

The family has so far maintained a dignified silence, issuing only a brief request for privacy as they grieve the loss of their son.

No official statement has been released, and efforts to obtain a response from the medical facility in question are ongoing.
