Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), along with his son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami and co-defendant Hajia Bashir Asabe, will remain in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre until January 7, 2026, pending the court's decision on their bail applications.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued the remand order following arguments on the bail motions during a hearing on Friday.
The defendants are facing a multi-count charge of money laundering involving approximately N9 billion, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of the Federal Government.
The judge, serving as a vacation judge, explained that he has multiple rulings to deliver and would not be able to decide on the bail applications immediately.
He scheduled the ruling for January 7.Joseph Daudu (SAN) represented the defendants in arguing for bail, while Emmanuel Ekele Iheanacho (SAN) appeared for the EFCC and opposed the motions.
All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.The case has attracted significant attention, marking a high-profile prosecution of a former top official from the previous administration.
