Malami Faces Fresh DSS Probe Over Alleged Firearms Discovery

Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, is facing a fresh investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) following the discovery of arms and ammunition at his residence in Kebbi State during a recent EFCC operation.

Reports emerged today alleging that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) uncovered high-calibre weapons and ammunition during searches at former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN)'s country home in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

According to sources cited in online publications and social media, the EFCC—whose primary mandate covers financial and economic crimes has handed over the recovered items to the DSS for a comprehensive national security investigation.

The claims, which surfaced prominently on January 12, 2026, suggest the discovery took place amid earlier EFCC raids on Malami's properties in December 2025.

These raids were part of a broader probe into alleged corruption, money laundering, and unexplained wealth.

This new allegation adds another layer to Malami's mounting legal challenges:In December 2025, EFCC teams conducted coordinated searches at Malami's homes and offices in Abuja and Birnin Kebbi, focusing on petitions alleging abuse of office, fraud related to asset recoveries (including the Sani Abacha loot), and acquisition of assets disproportionate to his known earnings.

A Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties (valued at over N213 billion) linked to Malami, his sons, and associates, spanning Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna states.

These include hotels, schools, universities, estates, factories, and vast land holdings.

On January 7, 2026, Justice Emeka Nwite granted bail of N500 million each (totaling N1.5 billion) to Malami, his wife Asabe Bashir, and son Abdulaziz in a 16-count money laundering charge involving over N8.7 billion.

Conditions include sureties with verifiable properties in Abuja, deposit of international passports, and no international travel without court approval.
