Makoko Residents Protest Demolition of Homes, Cry Over Breach of Setback Agreement

Residents of Makoko, the iconic waterfront community built on stilts along the Lagos Lagoon, took to the streets in protest on Thursday against the ongoing demolition of their homes by Lagos State Government officials.

The clearance exercise, which residents say began on December 22, 2025, has left many families displaced and their livelihoods threatened.

Community members told TheCable that they had initially accepted that structures located within the 30-metre safety setback from the high-tension power line which runs across the community and beneath the Third Mainland Bridge would be removed for safety reasons.

However, they allege that the demolition has gone far beyond the agreed setback zone, affecting homes well outside the restricted area in what they describe as a violation of earlier understandings with government authorities.

The protests highlight the residents' frustration and fear of losing their ancestral homes and means of survival in one of Lagos’ oldest and most historic informal settlements.

The situation remains tense as displaced families continue to call on the state government for dialogue, compensation, and respect for the previously agreed boundaries.
