Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of turning into an “emergency opposition mouthpiece” following a frosty reception from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a recent visit to the Presidential Villa.
In a statement issued on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Fayose claimed Makinde’s recent derogatory comments against President Tinubu including remarks made at former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s birthday event stemmed directly from frustration over the failed reconciliation attempt.
Fayose stated:
“That Seyi Makinde’s derogatory comment against President Tinubu at Osinbajo’s birthday further confirmed that he got a cold shoulder from the President during his last visit to the Villa.” He added:
“In his attempt to do damage control on his public speech against the President, Makinde met the shock of his political life when he visited Asiwaju last week.”
According to Fayose, President Tinubu made it clear during the meeting that he would not offer political concessions to Makinde and would instead back candidates from his own party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Oyo State for the 2027 elections.Fayose further alleged:
“As far as Oyo State is concerned, the President made it clear that he will support his party’s candidates in 2027.”
He suggested that if Makinde had received the “soft landing” he anticipated, he would not have escalated criticisms of the Tinubu administration.
Fayose also predicted challenges for Makinde within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), hinting that he may field candidates under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in future polls, and urged the APC in Oyo State to prepare for a strong contest.
The comments highlight deepening rifts in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly within opposition circles and between key PDP figures amid preparations for the 2027 general elections.
No immediate response has been received from Governor Makinde or the Oyo State Government to Fayose’s latest remarks.
