The Lagos State Government has suspended the anaesthesiologist involved in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege, following his death at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital on January 7, 2026.
The suspension, announced by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, is pending the outcome of a full, independent investigation into allegations of medical negligence.
The state has emphasized zero tolerance for any lapses in patient care, particularly in paediatric cases.
The toddler reportedly suffered cardiac arrest after undergoing routine procedures on January 6, including sedation for an MRI scan and central line insertion.
The family alleges excessive use of the sedative propofol, inadequate monitoring, and delayed resuscitation as contributing factors.
Nkanu had been stable prior to the interventions and was scheduled for medical evacuation to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States the following day.
In response to the tragedy, solicitors for Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Esege issued a legal notice to the hospital on January 10, 2026, demanding preservation and release of all relevant medical records, drug logs, and monitoring data.
Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital has confirmed it is conducting an internal review and cooperating fully with regulatory authorities.
The incident has drawn widespread public attention and condolences, including from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described the loss as “heartbreaking” and called for a transparent probe.
Investigations by the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria remain ongoing, with the focus now on establishing accountability and preventing similar occurrences in the future.
