Loyalists of former Kano State Governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were noticeably absent as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made his first public appearance in over a week amid swirling reports of his planned defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The event, held on Sunday at the Open Space Theatre, Government House, Kano, was a graduation ceremony combined with the distribution of empowerment packages to 2,260 beneficiaries from various state institutions.
Key figures missing from the occasion included the embattled NNPP state chairman and Kwankwaso ally, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, as well as prominent Kwankwaso loyalists such as:
Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso
Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Yusuf Kofar Mata
Commissioner for Internal Security, AVM Ibrahim Umar (rtd)
Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa
In contrast, Zubairu Abiya, who is aligned with Governor Yusuf, was officially recognised and acknowledged as the new NNPP state chairman during the programme.
The gathering was attended by several commissioners, local government chairmen, members of the Kano State House of Assembly, Speaker Ismail Jibril Falgore, and Secretary to the State Government Umar Farouk Ibrahim.
The conspicuous absence of Kwankwaso’s key supporters is widely seen as a sign of deepening rift between the governor and his former political mentor, triggered by speculation over Yusuf's potential switch to the APC.
Kwankwaso has publicly opposed any such move, describing it as betrayal and warning of consequences for those who abandon the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
The political tension in Kano has escalated, with Kwankwaso intensifying efforts to rally grassroots support through delegations and loyalty affirmations, while Governor Yusuf appears to retain control over state machinery and appointees.
