The King Kosoko Royal Family has formally declared veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Prince Jide Kosoko as the Oloja of Lagos-elect.
The announcement was made at the King Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island, where the 72-year-old actor was solemnly introduced to a large gathering of royal family members, supporters, and well-wishers.
Jide Kosoko, a prince (Omoba) of the historic Kosoko royal lineage, descended from King Kosoko, the 10th Oba of Lagos and the first Oloja of Lagos has long been recognized as part of the royal family.
He previously played a key role in family reconciliation efforts amid past disputes over the chieftaincy stool.
The Oloja of Lagos title became vacant following the death of the previous holder, Chief Adebola Ige, in December 2017.
Earlier processes in 2020 saw the Akinsanya Olojo Ruling House screen candidates, leading to the selection of Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko as Oloja-elect in December 2020.
However, installation delays prompted ongoing appeals to the Lagos State Government.The recent declaration by the broader King Kosoko Royal Family now positions Jide Kosoko as the designated successor, following traditional rites and consultations.
This development highlights the enduring cultural significance of the Oloja title in Lagos Island's heritage, tied to the legacy of King Kosoko, who ruled Lagos from 1845 to 1851 before his exile and later return as Oloja of Ereko under British colonial rule.
The family has yet to announce details on the formal installation process, which typically requires approval from the Lagos State Governor in line with the state's Obas and Chiefs Law.
The news has sparked widespread congratulations across social media and entertainment circles for the veteran actor's elevation to this prestigious traditional role.
