Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former spokesperson for Peter Obi's 2023 presidential campaign, has called on supporters of Peter Obi known as Obidients to join the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that those who remain outside the party are no longer true Obidients.
Appearing on Channels Television's The Morning Brief, Okonkwo stated bluntly: "So if you are an Obidient and you’re not in the ADC, sorry, you’re not an Obidient, you are a DisObidient."
The lawyer and actor praised the ADC as the "vehicle of good people" with strong backing from the South-East region.
He reflected on past strategies in the Labour Party (LP), noting that encouraging supporters to spread across multiple parties was a "tactical mistake."
Okonkwo expressed satisfaction that Peter Obi has reportedly shifted away from that approach.
Highlighting party unity, Okonkwo pledged his full support for whoever emerges as the ADC's presidential candidate through a democratic primary process. "Rest assured, whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the ADC, I will work for the person. I don’t have any personal rift with any person," he affirmed.
Okonkwo's comments come amid ongoing efforts to consolidate opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
Having parted ways with Obi and the Labour Party in 2024 over internal disputes, Okonkwo has positioned the ADC as the primary opposition platform.
The statement is likely to stir debate among Obidients, many of whom continue to rally around Peter Obi independently of any single party structure, as Nigeria's political landscape heats up for the 2027 polls.
