Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has publicly called on Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to step down if he can no longer align politically with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The commissioner made the statement during a live interview on Muhasa Radio, responding to reports that the deputy governor remains committed to the Kwankwasiyya political movement led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, despite the governor’s recent shift away from that camp.
Waiya stressed that significant political differences at the executive level could damage trust and impair effective governance, particularly since the deputy governor also holds the portfolio of Commissioner for Higher Education.
“What we are hoping for, just as we saw with some commissioners who felt uncomfortable and resigned, is that the deputy governor should also take an honourable step if he is no longer on the same political path with the governor,” Waiya said.
He warned that lingering suspicion in Executive Council meetings, where decisions about Kano’s development are made could undermine collective progress.
“Governance is about trust,” he emphasized.Acknowledging the competitive nature of Kano politics and the prevalence of personal ambitions, including aspirations for higher office, the commissioner argued that conflicting interests should not be pursued from within the administration.
“There is nothing wrong with ambition, but if interests begin to conflict with the direction of government, the most honourable option is to step aside and pursue those goals independently,” he stated.
While insisting the final decision belongs to the deputy governor, Waiya shared his personal stance: “If I were in that position, I would have left and faced my political journey clearly.”
He reaffirmed the administration’s focus on a “Kano First” agenda, insisting that loyalty to the state’s overall development must take precedence over individual or factional loyalties.
The remarks come amid ongoing political realignment in Kano following Governor Yusuf’s break from his former mentor and in-law, Senator Kwankwaso, which has prompted several officials and lawmakers to defect while leaving Gwarzo and a small group still aligned with Kwankwasiyya, heightening speculation about potential future tensions or impeachment moves.
