Kano Assembly Backs Gov Yusuf's Planned Defection from NNPP Over Leadership Crisis

The Kano State House of Assembly has endorsed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's potential defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent leadership disputes and court cases that threaten the party's structure and the governor's mandate.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini described staying in the NNPP as increasingly risky for Yusuf and other elected officials, warning of a possible repeat of the 2019 Zamfara State scenario where the Supreme Court voided APC victories due to flawed primaries, handing power to runners-up.

“There is an existing court judgement that recognises a particular faction of the NNPP,” Hussaini said. “

We cannot continue to remain in the party and risk a repeat of the legal disaster that happened in Zamfara State.”

The Assembly is consulting with Yusuf and Kwankwasiyya leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to facilitate a “strategic and timely” move to a more stable platform, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) mentioned as a possibility.

In a separate address to supporters, Kwankwaso issued a strong warning to defectors from the movement, insisting they must “compensate” for the investment made in their political careers.

“These people, no doubt, have collected ‘goods’,” he said, adding that defectors should repay the “labour” invested in them before leaving.

He cautioned against short-term incentives, noting many past defectors now live with regret, and described betrayal as a lasting stain on individuals and their families.

Meanwhile, the NNPP national leadership loyal to Kwankwaso has rejected a Kano High Court ex parte order reversing the dissolution of the party's state, local government, and ward executives.

National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson called the reported ruling “a farce” and an abuse of process, stating the National Working Committee had not been served and insisting courts lack jurisdiction over internal party affairs.

The party affirmed that the dissolution stands and threatened to petition the National Judicial Council if the order is confirmed.
