Nigeria and Italy have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Roberto Mengoni, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, warmly received Ambassador Mengoni on January 27, 2026, describing the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen ties between the two nations, which have maintained diplomatic relations for over six decades.
In a statement following the audience, the minister highlighted Italy’s status as a key strategic partner for Nigeria in Europe.
Discussions focused on several priority areas of mutual interest:Combating irregular migration through joint frameworks and cooperation
- Youth capacity building and skills development programs
- Provision of technical assistance in various sectors
- Enhanced defence cooperation and intelligence sharing
- Collaborative efforts to address insecurity and advance counter-terrorism
- Expansion of economic and trade cooperation for shared prosperity
Ambassador Mengoni, who recently presented his letters of credence and is accredited to Nigeria, Benin, and ECOWAS, expressed Italy’s keen interest in building even stronger relations with Nigeria.
He emphasized the potential for increased business links, investment, and collaboration across Africa, leveraging Nigeria’s strategic importance on the continent.
The visit reflects the renewed momentum in Nigeria-Italy relations and comes shortly after the ambassador’s earlier engagements with other Nigerian stakeholders, including a meeting with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, where similar themes of trade, investment, security cooperation, and cultural exchange were discussed.
Both sides expressed confidence that continued high-level engagement on these critical issues will deliver concrete outcomes in security, economic development, youth empowerment, and people-to-people connections.
