Four Rivers Lawmakers Reverse Decision, Back Fubara’s Impeachment Again

In a surprising political twist in Rivers State, the four members of the House of Assembly who recently withdrew their support for the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, have reversed course once again.

The lawmakers, who had publicly distanced themselves earlier this week citing appeals for peace, dialogue, and restraint from elders and stakeholders held a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, January 16, 2026, declaring their renewed commitment to the impeachment process.

They stated that Governor Fubara has shown no remorse or willingness to address the serious allegations of gross misconduct leveled against him by the Assembly. The original impeachment notice, signed by 26 lawmakers and initiated on January 8, 2026, accuses the governor of constitutional breaches, including extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and other administrative infractions.

This latest development comes amid ongoing tensions in the state, rooted in the long-standing rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike (now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory).

The House failed to reconvene as scheduled on January 15, raising questions about the process, but the Assembly has consistently maintained that the impeachment remains on course in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The four lawmakers' initial withdrawal had been seen as a setback for the pro-impeachment faction and a boost for calls for reconciliation.

Their swift U-turn now signals that divisions within the House may be narrowing again in favor of proceeding. As the situation continues to evolve, all eyes remain on how the remaining lawmakers and the governor will respond, with the potential for further escalation in Rivers State's protracted political crisis.
