Gbenga Daniel, senator representing Ogun East, says the bid to propose a new state from the old Ijebu province is close to reaching consensus.
Daniel spoke at Ikoto-Ijebu during the Bola Ahmed
Tinubu/Otunba Gbenga Daniel movement midterm assessment tour in Odogbolu LGA of
Ogun state.
The former governor of Ogun said unity of purpose between
the Ijebu and Remo people remains critical to securing approval from the
national assembly, noting that work on the proposed state has reached a
critical stage.
Daniel said the people of the two blocs must come together
to ensure the actualisation of the project.
He described the creation of a new state from the old Ijebu
province as the last real hope for accelerated and sustainable development in
the area.
“As the senator representing this region in the national
assembly, I have undertaken significant work behind the scenes to ensure
nothing hinders the creation of the proposed Ijebu-Remo state,” he said.
“However, I have deliberately chosen not to make much noise
until we have successfully crossed all the necessary hurdles.
“The parameters and requirements for state creation are
enormous and rigorous. Overcoming them demands nothing less than unity of
purpose among our people.”
The senator said the old Ijebu province consists of nine LG
councils, adding that anything short of the full complement would not guarantee
a successful process.
“The minimum and most critical requirement to achieve the
creation of this state is unity of purpose,” Daniel said.
“If the national assembly cannot discern that unity among
us, we cannot guarantee success. We must unite.”
Daniel said discussions are ongoing on the name and capital
of the proposed state.
“Let me inform you that we are on the verge of reaching a
consensus on the name and capital of the state: Ijebu-Remo state,” he added.
“If we fail to decide for ourselves, other people will take
those decisions for us.”
