Igbo Will Back Tinubu for Second Term to Secure Mainstream Political Relevance – Agbakahi

A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in the South East, Dr. George Agbakahi, has declared strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, asserting that the Igbo people will rally overwhelmingly behind him to ensure he completes a second term.

Speaking on Arise Television’s “Newsday” programme monitored in Abuja, Agbakahi explained that the recent endorsement of President Tinubu as the sole South East APC candidate by regional leaders has gained wide acceptance, extending beyond party members to non-members across the zone.

He highlighted unprecedented development projects delivered under the Tinubu administration as key factors driving this support.

Among the major infrastructure initiatives cited are:Ongoing reconstruction of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway

Reconstruction of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway

Dualization of the Enugu Ninth-Mile to Makurdi road

Construction of roads linking Abakaliki to Nasarawa (and onward to Abuja)

Establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), seen as a major institutional boost for regional growth

Agbakahi emphasized that beyond these tangible projects, the Igbo are strategically positioning themselves in the mainstream of Nigerian politics.

He argued that supporting Tinubu now would strengthen the South East’s bargaining power and improve the region’s chances of producing a president in the future when the opportunity arises.

“We want to be in the mainstream of Nigeria’s politics. We don’t want to remain on the periphery as has been the case since 2015,” Agbakahi stated.

Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, he admitted that internal divisions, particularly in Enugu State, contributed significantly to the APC’s poor showing across the South East.

He noted that lessons have been learned, with major reconciliation efforts now uniting key figures including Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma (political leader of the South East), the governors of Ebonyi and Enugu, and senior party officials such as Chief Emma Eneukwu, Deputy National Chairman (South).

Agbakahi pointed out that the APC now controls three of the five South East states, holds more National and State Assembly seats in the region than before, and has secured a higher volume of federal projects.

On the national front, he praised the Tinubu administration’s economic gains, including:

Reduction of inflation to 14.45%

Growth of foreign reserves to $47 billion

Increase in FAAC allocations to states from N934 billion in 2023 to N2 trillion currently

The APC chieftain described the party as the most viable political vehicle for the Igbo to achieve their long-term aspirations, dismissing other parties as being in disarray.

He predicted Nigeria is moving toward a dominant-party system similar to long periods of rule by Sweden’s Social Democrats or Britain’s Labour Party in the past rather than a one-party state.

Agbakahi concluded that by giving Tinubu strong backing in 2027, the South East stands to benefit far more from being part of the winning coalition than from remaining on the margins, as seen in the 2023 outcome.

The statement aligns with growing indications of renewed APC unity in the South East ahead of the 2027 polls, following earlier reports of former Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime also endorsing Tinubu as the best option for the region.
