IED Explosion Kills Nine Soldiers in Borno State

At least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed and several others severely injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast along the Gubio axis in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, security sources reported on January 5, 2026.

The incident occurred towards evening on Sunday as troops from the 145 Battalion in Damasak, under the 5 Brigade based in Maiduguri, were traveling along the route.

Preliminary investigations indicate the IEDs were planted on the road by Boko Haram insurgents.

It was not a direct ambush involving gunfire but a detonation triggered by the military convoy.

A senior military source, speaking anonymously, said several soldiers initially survived with severe injuries but succumbed later.

Eight died on Sunday, with one more passing away on Monday morning, bringing the total fatalities to nine.

Graphic images and videos from the scene circulated, showing lifeless bodies, injured personnel, and evidence of a powerful blast, including dismembered remains.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement on the incident.

The attack highlights the ongoing threat of IEDs in the region, where Boko Haram and related groups continue to target military movements despite years of counter-insurgency operations.

A similar ambush by suspected ISWAP fighters in the area in November 2025 also claimed lives of soldiers and civilian volunteers.
